ORLANDO Festival meets Orlando by Virginia Woolf through the extraordinary film adaptation by the writer and philosopher Paul B. Preciado, one of the most important experts of queer theory and gender studies.
His first movie Orlando, ma biographie politique transforms Virginia Woolf's masterpiece in a philosophical essay about the concepts of identity and mutation, about the freedom of self-determination beyond barriers imposed by language and by the binary conception of reality that it conveys. Preciado's Orlando dismantles the idea of family, it takes bodies that surpass gender, age, blood ties and fills them with life and desire. It creates a new biography, personal and collective, political and rebellious, that directly challenges us. The protagonist Orlando, performed by many trans and non-binary people, literally shows how the revolution is possible, is already present, all that it takes is for us to recognise it and follow it.

Paul B. Preciado will be present before the screening on March the 26th in Bergamo. The meeting will be translated in Italian Sign Language (LIS) for the event to be accessible for deaf signer audience.

Le Paradis (The Lost Boys)
by Zeno Graton (Belgio, Francia, 2023) - duration 83’

  • April the 17th, 8.30 p.m. at Lo Schermo Bianco, Bergamo
  • April the 19th, 9 p.m. at Cinema Nuovo Eden, Brescia

Berlin International Film Festival Generation14plus 2023, winner at Lovers Film Festival 2023

Zeno Graton, the Belgian film maker of Le Paradis, was inspired by reading Jean Genêt and watching his movie Un chant d’amour to narrate about a passionate love story that happens inside a jail for minors. The attraction between Joe (Khalil Gharbia) and William (Julien de Saint Jean) has a force of impact that creates a world within another world, the paradise of love within the hell of detention. Filmed in Cinemascope, with bright colors and a lyricism emphasized by the soundtrack of the French-Lebanese musician Bachar Mar-Khalifé, Zeno Graton's first movie’s style is far from social criticism cinema but does not for this reason give up reporting racism and the educational failures of the prison system. With an open and bittersweet ending, Le Paradis explores the disruptive force of love’s desire in a society in which loneliness can be more frightening than lack of freedom.

Domaḱinstvo za početnici (Housekeeping for Beginners)

O.V. macedonian, romani, albanian - italian subtitles

  • May the 8th, 8.30 p.m., Auditorium di Piazza Libertà, Bergamo
  • May the 9th, 4.30 p.m., 7 p.m., 9.30 p.m., Cinema Kappadue, Verona
  • May the 10th, 9 p.m., Cinema Nuovo Eden, Brescia

80th Venice International Film Festival 2023 - Horizons section, Queer Lion Award

Filmed in the empathetic and direct style of cinéma vérité, Domaḱinstvo za početnici (literally “Housekeeping for beginners”) narrates the emotional tensions, conflicts and joys of a group of people living together in Skopje. Dita (Anamaria Marinca) and her partner Suada (Alina Serban) are the cornerstone of a delicate balance that breaks following the death of one of the two, forcing the chaotic group to renegotiate roles and responsibilities. Director Goran Stolevski gives us an honest and not at all conciliatory portrait of a (un)family under construction where gender, class and ethnicity differences often explode into brutal conflicts and where the characters are contradictory, loud and not always lovable.
Domaḱinstvo za početnici oscillates between drama and comedy and has the great merit of stating, as affirmed by the director, that "queer families are not the future, they are the present!"
